Large-strip-size with high-packing-density has been recognized an effective cost reduction method for conventional leaded packages. However, the extreme large strip size may not be good for quad flat no-lead (QFN) packages due to the poor frame rigidity, especially its substantial half-etched features such as connecting bars interconnecting hundreds of even thousands of unit within a strip. Balancing or optimization between strip size (cost factor) and frame rigidity (handling or yield factor) has been a hot topic for study. Through the years of effort and cumulative experiences, many assembly houses start to have consensus on one optimized layout and merging into: 78x258mm strip size at one-block layout. We have been pursuing a standard platform for the industry to bring down the lead frame cost through economy of scale. This strategy does not cover conventional lead packages such as SOP, TSSOP, etc., but also QFN. Working in par with ASM equipment group, we are able to offer one-stop packaging solution.
